Niger neighbors: Military intervention is our 'last resort'
Synopsis
Niger faces instability as ECOWAS considers military intervention after a coup.
Synopsis
Niger, once one of the West's most important allies in the Sahel, faces a precarious future following a recent coup. A delegation from the West African Regional bloc, ECOWAS, arrives in Niger to engage with the new military leadership. ECOWAS expresses readiness to intervene and restore the democratic government to power if necessary. Amidst this political turmoil, hundreds of foreign nationals evacuate the country, primarily from European nations, as the situation grows increasingly unstable. Nigeria, which supplies 70 percent of Niger's electricity, has cut power to exert pressure on the coup leaders. Protests supporting the military junta have turned violent, yet the junta remains defiant despite ultimatums from ECOWAS to reinstate ousted President Muhammad Bazoum. The atmosphere in Niger is tense as the international community watches closely, hoping for a diplomatic resolution.
