Synopsis

In the small fishing village of Minamata, Japan, the Chisso Chemical Corporation's industrial waste contaminated local waters with methylmercury. This toxic substance accumulated in fish, leading to mercury poisoning among residents. In 1977, the criteria for certifying Minamata disease were established, often disregarding the rights of affected individuals. Over decades, patients fought for compensation through the Japanese judicial system. Director Hara documented their struggles for 15 years, drawing inspiration from Tsuchimoto’s 1971 film, MINAMATA: THE VICTIMS AND THEIR WORLD.
