Synopsis

Ten million years ago, the Mediterranean Sea basin was a desert valley, characterized by hyper-saline lakes and surrounded by mountains. The transformation began over 5 million years ago when the rock dike in the Strait of Gibraltar collapsed, allowing the Atlantic Ocean to flood the basin. This event created the largest waterfall in history, rapidly converting the arid landscape into a vibrant sea.
