Synopsis

Margaret Garner, a slave in pre-Civil War America, escaped captivity and made a tragic choice to kill her daughter rather than let her return to slavery. This story inspired Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison to write her novel Beloved. In 2005, Morrison collaborated with composer Richard Danielpour to create the opera Margaret Garner. Directed by Mustapha Hasnaoui, the documentary details the opera's creation and features mezzo soprano Denyce Graves, who reflects on her upbringing in Washington.
