Synopsis

The Mapuche are Chile's largest indigenous group, facing significant challenges as much of their ancestral land has been appropriated. The sacred Tolhuaca volcano, vital to their culture, is now threatened by plans to construct a geothermal plant. Until the 1880s, the Mapuche owned extensive territories in Chile, but much of this land was taken brutally during the regime of Augusto Pinochet. Community chief Alberto highlights that the Chilean state broke agreements with the Mapuche due to economic interests, exacerbating the struggle for their rights and land preservation.
