Synopsis
Ten minor children depend on Catharina Bolnes for survival after the death of her husband, painter Johannes Vermeer, during the France-Netherlands War.
Synopsis
Catharina Bolnes, widow of painter Johannes Vermeer, faces hardship in Delft during the France-Netherlands War (1672-1675). After Vermeer’s death, she struggles to support her ten children and declares bankruptcy. The film uses Vermeer’s paintings, etchings of Louis XIV’s policies, and reenactments of legal depositions to illustrate her challenges. Archival footage from WWII in Delft and a deposition from a perpetrator of rape warfare at the Criminal Tribunal in The Hague in 1996 provide further context to her story.
