Synopsis

In October 1996, Jan Wade and Vanessa Richards created an ancestral altar in two significant U.K. locations. The performance began in Whitehaven, Cumbria, the last English slaving port, set within an 18th century bonded warehouse that once stored goods for the slave trade. It continued at Wilberforce House in Hull, Yorkshire, the birthplace of anti-slavery pioneer William Wilberforce, now a museum dedicated to the fight against slavery. The collaboration unfolded over three weeks, starting on September 30.
