Synopsis

In Southern India, women gather to form a Jamaat, a response to the male-dominated bodies that apply Islamic Sharia law without their presence. Established in 2004, this women’s Jamaat has grown to 12,000 members across 12 districts. They have settled over 8,000 cases, addressing issues from divorce to violence. Filmmaker Deepa Dhanraj documents their meetings, where women passionately discuss their personal struggles and seek justice in a system that has long excluded them.
