Synopsis
In the summer of 1966, Western foreigners in China witnessed the Cultural Revolution firsthand. At that time, the country was isolated, resembling present-day North Korea. Young leftist activists in Western Europe admired Mao Zedong, believing he would lead to a utopian society. As China began to open up in the early 1970s, many Westerners outside the country confronted a starkly different reality. The documentary covers these contrasting perspectives during a tumultuous period in Chinese history.
