Chip Zullinger, the superintendent of Bertie County Schools, sought to reform education in North Carolina's poorest county. In 2010, he invited designers Emily Pilloton and Matt Miller to create a hands-on curriculum for high school students. Over a year, ten students at Bertie Early College High School engaged in projects that included building water purifiers and chicken coops. Their work culminated in the design and construction of a farmer's market pavilion, the first of its kind built by high school students in the U.S.
