How Gangs Control Honduras
Synopsis
Gangs from Los Angeles, like MS-13, impact Honduras as crime rates begin to decrease.
Synopsis
Created on the streets of Los Angeles in the 1980s, gangs like MS-13 and Barrio 18 were deported to Central America, particularly Honduras, in a wave of deportations that began 20 years ago. Back in their home countries, these gang members exploited a power vacuum, leading to increased gang strength and violence. Without an effective judicial system, Honduras struggles to deter crime and manage gang activities. However, recent developments indicate a shift, as violent crime rates have started to decrease. VICE visits a Honduran prison to provide insight into the current state of gang control and the evolving situation in the country.
