Funtime at the Vasulkas

Synopsis

In a studio at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Jeffrey Schier and Woody Vasulka present a new tool to their colleagues and teachers. Between 1976 and 1980, they developed the Vasulka Imaging System, also known as the Digital Image Articulator. This prototype was among the first digital audiovisual devices capable of generating image algorithms and converting them to an analog signal. The Department of Media Study, under Gerald O’Grady, became a significant center for media art education during this period, attracting influential figures like Hollis Frampton and Tony Conrad.
