The fashion industry, valued at 1.3 trillion dollars, faces significant environmental challenges. Cotton production is linked to water depletion and pesticide contamination. Chemical waste from clothing manufacturing severely impacts rivers in Asia, contributing to the industry's projected 1/4 share of global carbon emissions by 2050. Professor Richard Thompson, known as the godfather of microplastic research, reveals alarming data on microplastics in the environment. His findings indicate a substantial increase in microplastic quantities, particularly plastic fibers from synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, and acrylic. A single domestic washing load can release up to 700,000 fibers, many of which escape wastewater treatment. Between 2000 and 2016, polyester use in the garment industry surged from 8.3 to 21.3 million tons annually. This pollution affects marine life, with 1/3 of fish sampled in the English Channel containing synthetic materials in their guts, raising concerns about long-term ecological impacts.
