Thomas Alva Edison, born into America's industrial age, became a leading inventor by the time of his death in 1931. He held more patents than any other inventor, creating sound recording, motion pictures, and electric light. With only three months of formal schooling, Edison tackled numerous technical challenges. His competitive nature often led to ruthless business tactics, including a propaganda campaign against rivals. He also played a role in promoting high-voltage electrocution as a method of capital punishment.
