Driving While Black

Synopsis

A forthcoming report by law students from Seton Hall University reveals that racial profiling and targeting of non-residents in traffic stops is prevalent in Bloomfield, New Jersey, a majority-white municipality adjacent to Newark. The study indicates that in October 2015, a disproportionate number of black and Latino drivers, primarily passing through Bloomfield, received tickets. Despite these findings, the Bloomfield Police Department asserts that race does not influence their traffic enforcement practices. This report highlights ongoing concerns regarding racial bias in law enforcement within the community.
