Cursed Be the Phosphate

Synopsis

In Redeyef, a Tunisian city dependent on phosphate production, residents took to the streets in 2008 to protest against state corruption and hazardous living conditions. Their actions marked the first major uprising against President Ben Ali's regime, which responded with violence and repression. Although the revolt did not achieve all its goals, it sparked a wave of resistance among Tunisians, contributing to the momentum that led to the 2011 revolution and the broader Arab Spring.
