Coronavirus: how far will it spread?

The coronavirus, known as 2019-nCoV, presents significant challenges in predicting its spread. Chinese government expert Zhang Nanshan suggests the epidemic may peak in the second week of February, while academics from the University of Hong Kong predict a peak in April or May. The uncertainty surrounding the virus complicates accurate predictions, as the number of reported cases has surged due to increased surveillance and testing. Many individuals may not report mild symptoms or may choose to stay home. The reproduction number indicates that each infected person can spread the virus to 2 or 3 others, with infections doubling every six days. Mass quarantines and public health measures aim to slow transmission, but the effectiveness remains uncertain. Key unknowns include the time it takes for symptoms to appear and whether individuals can transmit the virus before showing signs of illness. The severity of the virus is also concerning, as it spreads faster than SARS, with around 20% of patients developing severe symptoms like pneumonia and organ failure.
