Synopsis
A two-channel installation combines digital video and 16mm film to examine Issei Sagawa, who murdered a fellow student in Paris in 1981.
Synopsis
Issei Sagawa gained notoriety in 1981 after murdering a fellow student in Paris while studying there. He later engaged in acts of cannibalism. After his release from a mental institution, Sagawa returned to Japan, where he appeared in numerous documentaries and sexploitation films. Commensal uses digital video and 16mm film to present Sagawa's story without moral judgment. The film blurs the lines between crime, fantasy, and the public persona of a controversial figure.
