Synopsis

Jacques Chirac, a central figure in French politics, rose to prominence as the leader of the opposition against President François Mitterrand. Following the right's victory in the 1986 legislative elections, he became Prime Minister. His support for the 'yes' vote in the 1992 Maastricht referendum caused divisions within his party. After a decisive win in March 1993, Edouard Balladur took office as Prime Minister, leading to Chirac's election as President of France in 1995.
