Synopsis
Riad Samir and brothers Jassim and Qassim Mohammed navigate the marshes of southern Iraq, where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers converge. Alia Farid’s Chibayish captures their daily lives, including caring for a water buffalo and discussing their community. The film contrasts their experiences with the encroachment of oil infrastructure and industrial waste. Since 2018, Farid has focused on the effects of extractive industries on the region's ecology and social dynamics, linking this work to her installation Palm Orchard from 2022.
