Can we turn the tide of plastic packaging?
Synopsis
Nestle commits to sustainable packaging, aiming for 100% recyclability by 2025.
Synopsis
Since throwaway plastics were introduced in the 1940s, they have become a staple in food and beverage packaging, with 78 million metric tons produced globally each year. However, only 14% of this plastic is recycled. At Nestle's Institute of Packaging Sciences in Lausanne, the company outlines its commitment to sustainability, aiming for 100% of its products to be recyclable or reusable by 2025. In 2018, Nestle produced 1.7 million metric tons of plastic and has faced protests regarding its environmental impact. This year, Nestle pledges 1.68 billion euros to its sustainable packaging program, focusing on simplifying materials, exploring new recycling techniques, and changing consumer behavior. Veronica, a representative at the institute, emphasizes the importance of consumer engagement in proper disposal to ensure effective recycling.
