Brexit countdown: divorce and beyond
Synopsis
Britain prepares for Brexit as Teresa May takes over from David Cameron as Prime Minister.
Synopsis
Britain is on the road to Brexit after voting to leave the EU. With Teresa May succeeding David Cameron as Prime Minister, the UK faces significant political changes. As of now, no talks have started, and Britain remains a full EU member. The first stage of this divorce begins with Mrs. May needing to outline her Brexit strategy, especially as she prepares for her debut at the G20 Summit in China on September 4th. Following that, she will attend the Conservative Party Conference on October 2nd and her first EU Summit in Brussels on October 20th. The EU27 refuse to engage until Britain invokes Article 50, which would formally start the two-year Brexit deadline. Most senior Conservatives agree that Article 50 should be triggered, with Mrs. May suggesting it could happen in the new year, potentially leading to Brexit Day on January 1st, 2019. The process involves sorting out obligations and rights, while the future UK-EU relationship will be addressed later.
