In Mauritania, children are separated from their mothers at the age of one and raised as slaves. "Born Slave" is the first film to document this practice, revealing the existence of a slave class in the only country where such a system persists. Swedish filmmakers entered Mauritania under the guise of tourism to capture this hidden reality. The film has been screened globally, including in South Africa and Washington, D.C., where it prompted a confrontation with agents from the Mauritanian embassy. Amnesty International incorporates the film into its advocacy efforts.
