Synopsis

#Blackmendream is a thought-provoking short-form documentary by queer artist-filmmaker Shikeith Cathey. The film features nine interviewees, both gay and straight, who are asked the poignant question, "When did you become a black man?" Shot in striking black and white, the subjects face away from the camera, often shirtless, as they navigate their personal experiences with masculinity, sexuality, and race. Through their candid reflections, the documentary highlights the complexities of intersectional identity and the societal expectations surrounding black masculinity. Each participant's story contributes to a broader conversation about self-conception and the diverse ways individuals understand their identities within the context of race and gender.
