Ines Johnson-Spain reflects on her biracial identity in 1960s East Germany. She is the daughter of Sigrid, a white woman, and Lucien, an African student from Togo. Her birth results from Sigrid's secret relationship with Lucien while she was married to Armin. Through interviews with Armin and others, Johnson-Spain discusses the family dynamics and denial strategies her parents used to create a sense of normalcy in a racially homogeneous society.
