Synopsis
John Akomfrah first met Ashes in Grenada while filming 'Caribs' Leap' in 2002. Years later, after learning of Ashes's death, Akomfrah created a tribute that contrasts vibrant scenes of Ashes sailing on the sea with the somber construction of his tomb. The documentary features a soundtrack that includes two local men recounting the events surrounding Ashes's death. Through these elements, the film reflects on themes of life, loss, and memory within the Caribbean context.
