Airbus puts super jumbo A380 out of production
Synopsis
Airbus ends A380 production by 2021 after cancellations from Qantas and Emirates.
Synopsis
The Airbus A380 superjumbo passenger jet, which first took flight in 2008, is set to end production by 2021. Designed to seat 500 passengers, the A380 aimed to outperform the Boeing 747 and transform air travel. Despite its popularity among passengers for comfort and quietness, airlines hesitated to invest in the costly double-decker aircraft. Challenges arose from the beginning, including tensions between Airbus's French and German management, leading to production delays and job losses. Significant cancellations from Qantas, which scrapped eight orders, and Emirates, which canceled 39, contributed to the decision to cease production. The A380's four engines also resulted in high fuel consumption, making it less appealing compared to smaller, more efficient jets that can operate on long distances with only two engines. The anticipated growth in passenger numbers on major routes did not materialize, as travelers increasingly prefer direct flights.
