Australian Aborigines perform rituals to honor the feared saltwater crocodile spirit.

Synopsis

The saltwater crocodile is the animal most feared by Australian Aborigines. A member of this community travels over land to find many examples of this feared animal. The ritual dances call on the great spirit of the king of the crocodiles for support and protection. Participants perform bloodcurdling screams and frenetic, rhythmic movements. It is believed that the king of the crocodiles is always asleep, which is why the dances and shouts continue until dawn, creating a powerful connection to their cultural beliefs and traditions.
