The Exiles
The Exiles is a documentary that tells the stories of Indonesian students who were stranded abroad after the 30 September Movement in 1965. Through interviews with the exiles and a combination of historical footage and animation recreations, the film presents a narrative of displacement and longing for home. Directed by Lola Amaria, this film marks her debut in feature documentary direction. The film premiered at the 17th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival on 27 November 2022, where it won Best Film. It later had its international premiere at the CinemAsia Film Festival in March 2023 and was released theatrically in Indonesia on 1 February 2024, attracting 63,045 admissions during its run.
