The Endurance is a documentary directed by George Butler that recounts Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition in 1914. The film is based on Shackleton's attempt to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent after his previous attempt to reach the South Pole fell short by 97 miles in 1909. The expedition faced severe adversity when the ship, named Endurance, became trapped and ultimately crushed in the ice pack, forcing Shackleton and his 28-man crew to endure the harsh polar winter. Using original film footage shot by Frank Hurley and interviews with surviving relatives, Butler presents the harrowing story of survival and rescue following an 800-mile open boat voyage on the Weddell Sea. Remarkably, all members of the crew survived against overwhelming odds, making their story one of endurance and endurance in the face of nature's challenges.
