Precious Images is a short film directed by Chuck Workman in 1986, featuring approximately 470 half-second-long clips from American films spanning from 1903 to 1985. The film organizes these clips by genre, with musical segments accompanied by the title song from Singin' in the Rain. The range of films includes light comedies, dramas, and horror, providing a broad overview of American cinema's evolution over more than eight decades.
Commissioned by the Directors Guild for its 50th anniversary, the film's editing took about three months. Workman described the editing process as a fast-paced sprint, where he had to make quick decisions on which clips to include. This rapid editing style resulted in a dynamic viewing experience that captures the essence of American film history in a compact format.
