Jalanan follows three street musicians, Bambang 'Ho' Mulyono, Titi Juwariyah, and Boni Putera, as they perform on Jakarta's commuter buses over a five-year period. The film captures their struggles to earn a living while navigating the complexities of life in Jakarta, including clashes with the law and the political landscape of modern Indonesia. The narrative is enriched by their original music, which serves as a backdrop to their quest for identity and love in a rapidly changing city. The documentary is notable for being the first in Indonesian history to receive a full theatrical release across the country. It screened for 34 consecutive days in five major cities. The film gained additional attention when it was screened by Jakarta's Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama ('Ahok') for senior government officials, highlighting its political relevance and impact in Indonesia.
