Helicopter String Quartet is a 78-minute documentary directed by Frank Scheffer, focusing on the preparations and rehearsals for the world-premiere performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen's composition Helikopter-Streichquartett. The film captures the unique requirement of the piece, which involves four helicopters, each carrying a member of the Arditti Quartet, a sound technician, and video equipment, all flying simultaneously. This performance took place during the Holland Festival in 1995, with helicopters provided by the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
The documentary features interviews with key figures including composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and string players Garth Knox, Rohan de Saram, Irvine Arditti, and Graeme Jennings. It premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival in October 1996 and was nominated for several awards. The film was also screened at the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema in April 2005 and later released on DVD by Medici Arts.
