Dreams on Spec is a documentary that profiles the lives of three aspiring screenwriters: David, Joe, and Deborah. David is a talent agent's assistant with three scripts in circulation, while Joe, a middle-aged family man, balances caring for his autistic daughter with his writing ambitions. Deborah aims to become one of the few African-American women to write and direct a feature film, facing financial struggles as she seeks funding for her project. The film intercuts their personal stories with insights from established screenwriters like James L. Brooks and Nora Ephron, providing context to the challenges faced by emerging writers in Hollywood.
The documentary was filmed in 2004 and 2005 across locations in Los Angeles and Portland. Director Daniel J. Snyder, who worked on the film during nights and weekends while maintaining a day job, captures the essence of the screenwriting experience. Cinematographer Harry Frith creatively filmed scenes of David surfing on Venice Beach using a Panasonic DVX100 camera in a splash bag, adding a unique visual element to the storytelling.
