The film was produced by Lisa Stevens, who began shaping the story in 2010 after discovering it while working on Crack House USA. Principal photography took place over ten weeks in Chicago, starting in September 2013. The film was well-received, winning the World Cinema Directing Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and achieving a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
