The series, produced by Creative Differences, originally aired on the Discovery Channel and Science. It was the first dinosaur documentary aimed at a teenage audience, specifically targeting viewers aged 13 and 14, and presented a darker and more serious tone compared to previous works. The series reimagines the comic book series Age of Reptiles.
Production began in spring 2009 and took three years to complete. The series features several stories set in various environments of the Mesozoic era. Initially titled Reign of the Dinosaurs, it was renamed Dinosaur Revolution and cut from six hours to four. Each episode includes commentary from scientists, providing context and distinguishing speculative elements from factual content. Notably, the first episode's setting changed from the Triassic Chinle Formation in the U.S. to the Ischigualasto Formation in Argentina, featuring species like Eoraptor and Ischigualastia.
