Dhaulagiri follows Esteban ‘Topo’ Mena, an Ecuadorian mountain guide, as he pursues his dream of climbing a new route on Mount Everest. Teaming up with Cory Richards, a National Geographic photographer, they attempt a first ascent on the north face of Everest. Their initial attempt fails, leading them to plan a return the following season. However, the global pandemic closes the North side of Everest, prompting them to shift their focus to Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world.
The film captures the intense pressure and risks associated with climbing Dhaulagiri, pushing the team to confront their motivations for climbing. As they face the possibility of death, the climbers reflect on the worth of their ambitions and the dangers inherent in their sport. The narrative intertwines personal aspirations with the stark realities of high-altitude climbing.
