After Itō reported the assault to the police, they initially refused to accept the case due to a lack of evidence. However, the situation changed when her team obtained the hotel surveillance footage, prompting the police to consider an arrest.
Despite the initial progress, the investigation was halted just before Yamaguchi's arrest, leading Itō to publicly accuse him at a press conference. This act was rare in Japan and sparked significant public reaction, contributing to the MeToo movement in the country. Itō faced online slander but persisted in her investigation for over seven years, ultimately winning a civil lawsuit against Yamaguchi and influencing revisions to laws on sexual offenses in 2023.
