Beautiful Young Minds is a documentary that follows the selection and training of the U.K. team for the 2006 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Slovenia. It features young mathematicians, many of whom have a form of autism, and examines the connection between autism and mathematical talent. The film captures the rigorous preparation and the excitement of the competition, showcasing the team's journey to the IMO.
Directed by Morgan Matthews, the documentary was first shown at the BRITDOC Festival on 26 July 2007 and later broadcast on BBC 2 on 14 October 2007. The U.K. team achieved significant success at the IMO, winning four silver and one bronze medal. The film also served as inspiration for the 2014 film X+Y, which is based on participant Daniel Lightwing.
