The film premiered at the San Francisco Film Festival on October 25, 1968, and had its official world premiere in Tijuana, Mexico, on May 22, 1971, marking the fifth anniversary of Arruza's death. The film opened in Los Angeles on May 24, 1972. Boetticher delayed the release until he was satisfied with the final product, stating he wanted it to be a film he could look back on with pride.
