American Harmony is a documentary film directed and produced by Aengus James, focusing on the barbershop music genre. It features the lives of notable quartets such as OC Times, Max Q, Vocal Spectrum, and Reveille, capturing their experiences during the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International conventions from 2005 to 2007. The film includes interviews with both prominent competitors and everyday members, referred to as 'Joe Barbershoppers,' providing a comprehensive view of this unique musical subculture.
The film was produced over a span of more than three years and was initially screened at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2008 International Convention in Nashville. It was released theatrically in April 2009 and later made available on DVD in June 2010. American Harmony won the Best Documentary award at the 2009 San Diego Film Festival and received several nominations and selections at various film festivals.
